April 2008: World Food Programme cuts rations to Darfur - Take action now
Global Day for Darfur

April 13th, 2008

The Darfur conflict entered its 5th year in April 2008. Not only has the international community failed to help end the violence, but it has allowed the humanitarian crisis to become what the United Nations considers 'the worst in the world today.'

This Global Day focussed on the devastating effects of conflict on Darfur's children.
The effects of trauma, displacement, separation from family, violence and fear are taking their toll on Darfur's youngest generation. These kids are at high risk for poor health, malnutrition and severe psychological and social problems. They are vulnerable to violence, sexual assault and recruitment by armed groups. 1.8 million children are affected by the violence, many of them too young to remember a time of peace.

Take action
The Day for Darfur has passed, but you can still take 10 minutes to send a message to Canadian politicians. Start by opening our toolkit for Canadian activists. Here you will find a letter to Prime Minister Harper, where you can add your signature and a personal message. A hand-print is the international symbol for this global day; so there is also a place on this letter where you can trace or print your hand. In this toolkit, you will also find instructions on how to leave a phone message for Canadian politicians, using the 1-800-GENOCIDe phone system.

Get others involved
Ask other people to join you in taking 5 or 10 minutes for the actions above. It is easy to forward this email to friends or to show someone a printed copy of the toolkit for Canadian activists. You can also bring these materials to your family, school, or faith community, and get dozens of people to put hand prints on letters or to call 1-800-GENOCIDe.

Take to the streets
Day for Darfur rallies took place in Toronto, Vancouver, Calgary and Winnipeg. Thanks to all who helped to make these rallies sucessful.
