Campaigns of SDC and our members

Save Darfur Canada's primary focus is to support Darfur advocacy at the grassroots level. We provide campaign materials and information to individuals, community groups, student groups, faith groups, and organizations.

Our largest campaign at present is the national postcard campaign. This campaign aims to engage as many Canadians as possible, across the country, in asking the Canadian government to support an end to the violence in Darfur. Please help us to collect signatures on postcards. These same postcards include a place where people can (if they choose) add their email addresses to our listserve - this means that when you collect signatures, you are also building a stronger and stronger national network.

Please take a moment to check out the postcard campaign and other campaigns listed in the left side bar. Or, read on to find more things that you can do in your community.

Five more things you can do in your community

1. Take the postcards campaign to a local group, school, church, synagogue, mosque, etc.
One of the best ways to collect many signatures on postcards is to take them to a place where people gather.  Some people have distributed postcards to a whole room full of students or to a religious congregation, and have gathered hundreds of signed postcards in a matter of minutes!  It’s always easiest to start with the places you know best – but maybe afterwards, you might bring some postcards to a friend at another school, to another faith community, or to another city…

2. Collect money to support action in Darfur
Save Darfur Canada has been honoured to benefit from several initiatives to raise funds and awareness for Darfur (some small and some large).  This can be something as simple as collecting change along with postcard signatures or something as powerful as a benefit dinner.  Every $100 donated covers the cost of printing 4,000 postcards.  We are sending the prime minister at least 300,000 postcards, and we hope to find donors who will make this possible.

3. Pick up the phone and call 1-800-GENOCIDE
1-800-GENOCIDE is an avenue to directly influence the policy of the Canadian Government towards the crisis in Darfur.  When callers in Canada dial in to 1-800-436-6243 (GENOCID) they are connected to a one of a choice of Members of Parliament.  The system also provides suggested speaking points for each MP.  Callers are connect to staff and voicemails at influential MP offices. For more information, click here.

4. Host a movie screening in your community
A movie screening is a powerful way to get people informed and involved. For you, it can be as simple as setting up an LCD projector and a screen at a local community centre, library, or school. Check out movies such as “The Devil Came on Horseback” (available at many video rental outlets, and available for screening via www.globalgrassroots.org) and “Darfur Diaries” (www.darfurdiaries.org).

5. Get involved in a local group – or start one yourself!
If you want to do more about the crisis in Darfur, you’re not the only one!  If you want to know which groups exist in your area, contact info@savedarfurcanada.org.  Let us know if you are looking for a particular kind of group (such as a student group or a faith group).
